I'm guessing because they close at 7 is the reason we were the only table at 5:30 besides one other. I had the trout with boiled potatoes and small lettuce, tomato, onion salad. Potatoes were buttery and lemony; fish cooked perfectly. Husband had the veal stew which was on special and he said it was delicious. Waiter also brought a breadbasket to the table with some really good white bread. Prices were very reasonable and the service was good. I wanted to get the Bosnian pita for appetizer, but they were out and probably sold out from the lunch crowd. I like this place and will definitely come back.

Love the great combos of meat, rice, and veggies. Great ambiance... friendly service, European sports on TV.

The place is clean and the food is great. If you don't mind Eastern European "hospitality" then try out this place.

My favorite place to eat in salt lake whenever I visit, but you close way too early! Who closes a restaurant at dinner time?? Makes no sense!

Dropped in for the first time today for a late lunch. Ordered one of the daily specials, stuffed cabbage rolls. The service and food were great and Cafe on Main will be on my regular rotation of lunch places!

I have been coming here for the last 4 years with my friends. We order the same stuff everytime the gulash or the musaka(sorry if I spelled it wrong). The service is great.Their bread is always fresh and the butter's not frozen making it easier to spread.Besides this, I've tried their grilled or roast trout once and it was awesome except it took me an hour to get around the bones because I am lazy.Good place.I'll be there again next week.

Tried it for the first time and thought it was pretty good. They have daily special and I got the potato pie thing. Could used little more seasonings on everything but over all it was good.

Awesome food, great service. This little piece of the east is where you need to go. Soft baklava. Great breaded chicken makes a soul warming meal. The tiramisu is the best in the state.

Great food and coffee. Very good representation of European cafe experience. I will be back.

Balkan cuisine. You know, that sort of umbrella term that covers the Serbs and Turks and Romanians and Hungarians and pretty much everyone else in that region. I'm hardly an expert, but Cafe On Main bills itself as a Balkan joint, and I saw lots of Balkan-y dishes there. Let's start with the daily specials. Each day of the week, there's a pre-determined special. The day I was there, a Thursday, it was an either/or. There was a delicious looking stew, or moussaka. I had just burned through a pot of soup I made that was waaaay too big in the last few days, so stew wasn't on my brain. But my dining companion went for the moussaka. It was delicious, as I now know after forcing him to let me sample his dish. Sometimes moussaka can be too dry, but not in this case. Moist, and the flavor of the meat and the potatoes mixed nicely, with a dollup of sour cream on the top. I ordered the chicken wiener schnitzel plate. I dunno about them fries, but I think you should do yourself a favor and get the rice if it's offered. It's aromatic, not super dense, and great change of pace from other sides. As for the schnitzel itself, I can't complain. It was finely breaded, thinly pressed, and not oily. All in all, that plate of food was enjoyable, top to bottom. Here's what you need to know about the actual dining experience. It ain't much on the outside. It's all by itself there on the corner of 2700 South and Main, and you'll pass right by if you blink. It looks run down. The interior is kept up nicely, and there's a big ol' TV (presumably to watch soccer matches as others have mentioned) and pictures of all the dishes on the wall. You walk in, and they seat you, menu you, serve you, etc. But you walk up to the counter to pay. Parking sucks. Like, sucks sucks. It's jammed in there, and tiiiiight. And there are about 2.25 parking spaces. So get there early, or get creative. But give them a try. The owner was super nice, the food was surprisingly good, and I have no reason not to go again.

Not bad. I probably need to explore the menu a bit more. I have no idea how to pronounce or spell what I ordered but it was basically a beef patty in a delicious pita bread. The seasoning was great. I was the only person in the place speaking English. I have idea what the other language was. But it felt pretty authentic. They don't rush you out. You have to ask to be let out. Very casual. Very nice people. I will be back to be more adventurous.

I ordered the Cevapi based on other recommendations, but it was a rather bland sandwich and quite greasy, I don't think I'll order it again. The half size Cevapi comes with five 3" sausages on a pita and raw onion on the side. It was pretty big and filled me up. The whole size is twice that and could easily feed two moderately hungry people, IMO. The french fries are interesting... they remind of the ones that I used to have in elementary school... the cheap ones with the ribbed sides. Judging by the food on other peoples plates, I would say try your hand at another dish. There was a meat platter that looked really delicious. Slow, but friendly service.

My wife has been invited me to visit this place, at the beginning I was not that excited, but I regret not coming here before, food so good, fresh, service awesome, seems to be at grandma's house

I have been wanting to review Cafe on Main ever since I got onto yelp. Here it goes. I am guessing this is only place in Salt Lake City that offers Balkan cuisine. Its a nice, quiet place, run by a friendly couple. Whenever I have been here, I have seen a fair share of natives. A good sign of the food, I suppose. My favorite dish is the chicken gulas. Its a spicy chicken stew that is served with rice (see photo). Very tasty, feels and tastes very much like a homemade dish. I have also tried their chicken kebabs which comes with rice or fries. I feel they fry the kebabs in order to serve it quicker. The chicken tends to be tough. I like the stew better. If you are fond of beef/veal, then your options open up considerably. Not so for me. They also have daily specials listed in their menu. Like chicken gulas is a Wednesday (if I remember correctly) special. But they are usually flexible with this list and can accomodate your request for another day's special. Desserts - tried the baklava. One baklava would be enough to clog the arteries of two people. I won't be ordering it again. But there are other options available, maybe some other time. The food is really cheap. One entree will only set you back by $6, and I am talking about dinner prices here. How cool is that! Oh yes, you get to watch European football on TV. Yes, the real football. One star for that!

I just had the Balkan omelet and it was delicious. I've had lunch here on numerous occasions through the years and have always found it to be tasty and fresh. My favorite northern Balkan restaurant in Salt Lake.

Surprisingly good for a casual lunch in South Salt Lake. I had the Thursday special and very much enjoyed the hearty flavors.

Just went for a quick cup of coffee and baklava. Few things better than coffee and baklava. Now, I'm not a coffee expert. I like it, but I can't say much about different roasts and blends and all of that, but I liked their coffee. And the baklava was very good. If I ever go back for a meal, I'll be sure to update.

Meat lovers paradise. I have been there twice and both times I have liked it. It is in a small location not much parking. Small dinning area. The food is good. The service was good. The one thing I really loved there was the chocolate creeps. Everything else was just okay. My friends love the meat platter (which to me seemed a little over kill on the meat.)

cute litte place, kind of in the middle of nowhere. i have no experience with bosnian/balkan food, so i trusted my turkish friend and got the meat platter. the sausages were my favorite.. i think you can get it in sandwhich form.. chevapi? and thats what i'm getting next time. the pita (?) was also very good. its spinach and cheese in a flaky pastry... kind of like spanakopita. prices are insanely cheap! that was the best part of dinner. for three people, it came out to less than $20! service was relatively friendly, fast serice, and overall no complaints.

This place is awesome! Whenever I'm in town, I try to make a stop. My usual is the sandwich that has the little sausages in it (Chevapi... I think) with a salad (Balkan salad, maybe?). The sausages taste as good as the kebapi I used to eat in Skopje, but the star is the bread. It is so fresh, dense, and flavorful! The salad is essentially just tomatoes, onions, and cheese, but it's always delicious (though, I'm usually in town during the summer when tomatoes are fresh... not sure how good it would be in the off season). The people that run the place are very nice and will help you if you have any questions about the menu. Plus, you can eat your meal while watching Bosnian tv! Bonus!

Never having had Balkan food (in fact, I had to google Balkan to know where it was in the world), I'm not an expert, but the food was generous and inexpensive and beautifully presented. Meat is big in the Balkans, by the way. Lots, and lots of meat! Kind of Greek, Turkish, and other flavors I can't identify. i want to return for breakfast!

I agree with the other reviews the goulash dishes are yummy!!

Absolutely wonderful Mediterranean food and amazing service!

Overall, a good place to watch a soccer match, but not a good place to satisfy your meat cravings. The bread is, as previous reviewers have noted, rather good and very plentiful. I was surprised that a "plain" white bread (which I rarely enjoy and almost always avoid) could be so delicious and have such great texture. However, I found the meat platter for two to be flavorless and seriously lacking some vegetables. The meat is tough and unremarkably flavored, especially so when compared to other Balkan restaurants in the SLC area. The platter was also far more than two people can eat, but I can hardly fault them for that. The platter itself consists of cevap, chicken, beef and what I believe was veal among a sea of fries. The fries are of the general Greek fast-food variety, not bad but not good either. The cevap appeared to be undercooked as well. All in all, if I end up at Cafe on Main again, I will definitely not order any meat-focused dishes. I would most likely try one of the salads, both of which looked better.

This place is super-coze. I love a place that makes you want to linger with an espresso after you have eaten a great meal and chat the afternoon away. Cafe on Main is full of linger-ers (I think I invented a word). I think it's the food, the homey decor, and the casual but attentive service that makes this place full of regulars. This place passes my "must-be" criteria: Must be local! Must be cheap! Must be delicious! This place gets a gold star on its forehead! I have tried quite a few items on the menu and if you have not had Balkan cuisine before, you can't go wrong with the Pita (think spanakopita in tube form, and filled with spinach, cheese, or meat). Get it as an appetizer or get them to-go. You will thank me, and you're welcome! They have lots of egg options. House-made sausage and eggs, and an omelet (not as firm as American style and filled with tomato and feta), and you can pretty much get an egg with just about anything (lovelovelove). They have the daily special, and I have tried the stuffed bell peppers, and the chicken stew . The specials have been ok, but I would stick to the menu. I think the daily specials seem a little cafeteria-ish. Another "must have" on the menu is the Balkan salad. So simple and so good. Tomato, feta, white onion. That's it. It pairs well with the richness of the meat they serve, and it serves two. Great place!

I come here about once a month. They have a small Balkan menu and their food has a nice flavor. Simple and worth it. They have an old world cooking style that is very comforting. When you go you won't feel rushed to eat and leave. You can relax and take your time, great little find.

When I'm hungry I order meat plate. I'm not a fan of chicken but it's not bad. I usually order with extra onions. the deserts are all good but, after the big plate of meats, I skip desert - just a coup of Lavazza. I normally go there for lunch and staffs treat me like a family. I know there are three other Balkan restaurants in town, but, I like this one the best. daily special are very inexpensive. Liver dish is one of the best I ever had. Trout is good too. Parking is a minor challenge.
